‘Little Mermaid’ Star Halle Bailey Supports Rachel Zegler Amid Racist Backlash Surrounding Disney ‘Snow White’ Reboot: “Truly the Perfect Princess”

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is hitting back at them all? Last weekend, Rachel Zegler urged fans to refrain from tagging her in “nonsensical discourse” regarding her upcoming role as Snow White in Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The Colombian actress, whose casting was first announced last year, has faced racist backlash over the role — and she is tired of hearing about it.

“Extremely appreciative of the love I feel from those defending me online, but please don’t tag me in the nonsensical discourse about my casting,” she wrote on Twitter. “I really, truly do not want to see it.”

Zegler added, “I hope every child knows they can be a princess no matter what,” along with a cluster of throwback photos in which she is dressed as the beloved Disney princess.

The West Side Story breakout’s post caught the attention of Halle Bailey, who also faced scrutiny after she starred as Ariel in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid earlier this year.

“We love you so much ❤️ truly the perfect princess,” Bailey commented, to which Zegler replied, “My sweetest girl ❤️ I love you always.”

Zegler’s upcoming film faced a fresh wave of criticism last week after The Daily Mail published photos they claimed were from the movie’s production in Bedfordshire. According to the publication, the photos show a “stand-in princess walking with a diverse band of merry men and women,” who were allegedly portraying the seven dwarfs.

While a Disney spokesperson initially told The Daily Beast that the photos are “fake and not from our production,” they later walked back their statement, saying they were, in fact, from the set — but they were not “official photos.”

Earlier this year, Disney revealed that they are “taking a different approach” to how they portray Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy and Sneezy “to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film,” per The Hollywood Reporter. Their response came after Peter Dinklage, who has dwarfism, angrily slammed the company for remaking the 1937 film.

“You’re progressive in one way [by casting a Latina actress], but then you’re still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the fuck are you doing, man?” he fumed while appearing on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in January. “Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Snow White is set to release on March 22, 2024.
